The other night I did not want to go to the gym, well actually there have been a few nights I really did not want to go to the gym. Well honestly, I never really want to go to the gym, but the last couple nights have been tough.  Take the other night for example, I got home from work around 6:30 absolutely exhausted and fell asleep on the couch.  I woke up around 8 and there were a million reasons I wanted to put on my jammies and call it a night. I had a new book on my kindle, elimination time on Dancing with the Stars, new DVD from Netflicks in the mail, DVR is creeping towards 100%, it was raining, and I just plain old wanted to crawl into bed.  So what did I do?  Did I take the night off even though it wasn’t a scheduled rest day?  Or did I suck it up and hit the gym?  Do you really have to ask?  I laced up my sneakers and went to the gym, duh.

I hear a lot of people say they just can’t find the motivation to get to the gym, and lots of these same people ask me how I get the motivation to go to the gym every night.  The answer usually surprises them, I don’t.  Yup, you read that right, I’m not always motivated to go to the gym, or spend my Sundays prepping food for the week, but I do it.  If I only did things I was motivated to do, my time would be spent doing nothing but drinking gin, eating guacamole, and watching ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’, and though that sounds like an awesome night, its no way to live day in and day out.

Every day I do stuff I’m not motivated to do, get out of bed, iron, put on underwear (well most days I put them on), brush my teeth, go to work, blah, blah, blah.  Who is seriously motivated to do all that crap?  And I’m sorry but if you say you jump out of bed every day psyched to iron clothes you’re a liar, no one loves clothes more than me, and even I’m not motivated to iron, especially if there are pleats involved.  We all do what we have to do, especially as moms (I know you think making your kids lunch every day is a big pain in the hole, but don’t worry I won’t rat you out), I just think of going to gym as one of the things I need to do.

And I do need to go to the gym, it’s not a want, it’s a need.  It’s stress release, it’s precious me time, it has become vital to my sanity (I use the term sanity loosely, because there are plenty of people out there who would claim I lost any and all sanity a long time ago, to them I say just imagine how bad I would be if I didn’t have my outlet).  I don’t want to presume to tell you what you need, but I think you need to go to the gym.  Seriously, for the next four weeks its not “I’ll go to the gym if I can find the time”, its “I’m going to the gym”.  As soon as you finish reading this, schedule your workouts. We all know you can find the time, and once its scheduled you have to do it, no ifs, ands, or buts.  Even if you have a negative four on the motivation scale, make yourself go, its non-negotiable.  Hopefully after four weeks you’ll have developed a nice little habit for yourself, and if you haven’t maybe you’ll at least lose a couple inches and be inspired enough to keep it up.  Either way let me know, and also let me know how (if) you keep yourself motivated!
