I looked in the mirror and my jaw dropped open… I had seen something amazing… My abs! They were mine. I wasn’t flipping through one of the numerous fitness magazines I have, I wasn’t ogling Dana Linn Bailey, or Nicole Wilkins… It was ME! I was pumped, I watched them “work” as I bent, and twisted my torso around. And perfect timing no less as the hubs and I had a trip to Vegas! What better way to show off all that hard work than in a bikini! My husband (the blessed & hard-working man he is), retains a toned, washboard abdomen consistently. (Even throughout those indulgent “college” years). I always have and do admire them…
Washboard Abs? More than just Eye-Candy!
Who isn’t a fan of a toned tummy?! Honestly, not everyone is, some people think that it’s not “feminine” and I’ve even gotten the “why do you want to look like a man?” question asked of me. Besides enjoying how they look, and how confident they make me feel, here are some OTHER reasons why having that “6-pack” is more that just fun to look at!
Core muscles are SO important to your overall health! It is the CENTER of your bodies strength! The core muscles include your obliques, abdominals, lower back, AND glutes .
Benefits of a strong core:
- improve posture and prevent lower back pain
- helps to avoid injuries
- improves physical performance
- improves balance
While I do get some negative feedback from my ab definition, I remind myself that that I know as I get older, I want to maintain my muscle strength! I want to be a woman who can stand on her own two feet. (LITERALLY) I cannot predict what the future may hold for my life, but what’s the harm in being proactive about my health? I’d rather be tight and toned vs. skinny and soft now and as I age (which will be gracefully, of course!).
Since I am so passionate about maintaining a strong core, I work it about 6 days a week. I usually do a total of 200 reps using my core. Don’t let the number 200 scare you! It’s broken down into about 10-20 reps of about 10-20 different ab exercises!
- basic crunch
- basic sit up
- in & outs
- bicycles (my favorites!)
- weighted oblique lifts
- russian twists
- side planks
- tea cups
- side plank twists
- weighted sit-ups
- side crunches
- hanging leg raises
- reverse crunch
- the 100
- lean backs
- weighted standing twists
- leg extensions
I get bored so quickly, and I found that my best results have come from doing a variety of exercises! And, being strong from the inside, reflects on the outside! Physically, mentally, and spiritually!!!
