I am not one to jump on the latest diet fad. I have always exercised and led a relatively healthy lifestyle so I have never felt the need to alter my diet in any dramatic way that I would not be able to maintain. If you are like me, then there is a fantastic book called Shred by Dr. Ian K. Smith that will give you daily game plan to lose pounds and drop inches while teaching you great eating and exercise habits that you can keep for life!

Having just recently had a baby and wanting to jump-start my metabolism to drop the dreaded baby weight, I decided to give this book a try. The six-week plan preaches meal spacing, meal replacement, and diet tips to follow, combined with strategic exercise. I found it extremely easy to follow and realistic to implement into my life without upsetting my family with restrictive meals, spending hours cooking special meals, or feeling hungry and tired (you are allowed 4 meals and 3 snacks!).

I loved how each week’s program details would start off with a narrative discussing where you are in the diet, outlining goals and tips to get through the week. The menus in the book were flexible to fit my pallet and the calorie cutting (diet) was progressive from week to week, so it never felt punitive.

Because I had just given birth, I was not able to participate in heavy/intense cardiovascular exercise for the first 4-6 weeks, so my results may have been even more impressive but, in spite of that, I have still lost almost all of my baby weight after 7 weeks! According to the book, most people following the program will lose 18-25 lbs., 4 inches and 2 sizes in a cycle (6-weeks). This healthy life program is definitely worth a try for anyone, but especially those of you looking to make a lifestyle change in 201. New healthy habits for the New Year, New You!
