With claims of boosting energy, eliminating stress and giving you all your recommended daily B vitamins, in addition to a whopping 9 grams of protein per serving, nutritional yeast is starting to make a name for itself in the super-food world. Being naturally low in fat and sodium, and free of dairy, gluten and sugar, nutritional yeast would be an ideal addition to anyone with gluten or dairy allergies. Also great for vegetarians looking for a protein boost.
You can find nutritional yeast in most natural food stores, in the bulk aisle. Nutritional yeast, not to be confused with “baking yeast”, is grown on beet molasses and is “deactivated” once it is harvested, so it has no leavening abilities like the baking yeast does. It comes in the form of flakes or a yellow powder, similar in looks to cornmeal. With a nutty, strong, cheese like flavor, nutritional yeast makes for a great condiment on popcorn, eggs, or any dish in place of, or addition to, the cheese called for in the recipe.
I just recently gave this SUPER food a try on my popcorn, and was pleasantly surprised by its ”savory” flavor. Since then, I have been adding it to many dishes, and thinking it would be great in mashed potatoes or sprinkled on pasta.
If you have ever been curious about giving this stuff a try, I say GO FOR IT!! You too may be pleasantly surprised! I would LOVE to hear what you think, so be sure to post back your thoughts once you have tried it!!
