I love to read, and I enjoy sharing my love of books with my children. So I was thrilled when my son’s teacher said he was reading well above his third grade level! But that can also present some challenges – such as finding books that are age-appropriate in content but still challenging enough to hold his interest.
I reached out to teachers and friends, and I came away with a great list of books for young readers!!
- The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan – My son loved these books! He couldn’t read them fast enough! There are five books in the series, beginning with Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief.
- Chomp by Carl Hiaasen – This is another book that my son really liked, about a boy living in a zoo in Florida. Hiaasen is also the author of Scat, Hoot, and Flush.
- The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney is another of my son’s favorites. Lots of laughs can be heard when he reads these books!
- 39 Clues is a series of books written by different authors revolving around two young orphans searching for a treasure by following the clues given to them. The first book in the series, The Maze of Bones, was a big hit with my son. He can’t wait to read the rest!!
Here are some other books on my son’s reading list that were suggested to us by friends:
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Brett Helquist
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
The Guardians of Ga’hoole by Kathryn Lasky
I can’t wait for my son to go on all the adventures he can find in a new book! What do your kids like to read?
