Finally, warm weather has arrived. I love summer, because I can get out of the kitchen, dust off my grill and cook outdoors. Out of all the recipes I have created, one of my favorites is my twist on the simple, American classic – the hamburger. Still one of the most popular items at a grill-out, burgers offer perfect versatility for an easy to prepare outdoor meal.

I love to make my family this Herb-Filled Burger, using lean beef to keep it healthy. Easy to prepare and using the fresh herbs available in the summer months, such as basil and rosemary, my lean Herb-Filled Burger offers a unique taste for those who want more than just ketchup and mustard for flavor – without adding calories and fat. Serve the burger with a mixed salad and fresh vegetables for a light, healthy, outdoor meal.

Herb-Filled Burger

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 10 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Serving size: 1 burger

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Laura's 96% Lean Ground Round or 96% Lean Ground Sirloin
  • 1 cup mixed herbs (such as basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary), washed, dried, and finely chopped
  • 6 Tbsp fat-free cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat grill to high. Lightly oil the grill rack. Divide ground beef into four even portions; divide each portion in half again and pat out into large flat patties. You will have 8 patties.
  2. In bowl, mix fresh herbs with cream cheese. Divide the herb-cheese mixture among four of the patties, spreading it almost to the edge of each patty. Top each patty with second patty and seal the edges by pinching them closed.
  3. Gently place patties on hot grill. Grill about 4 minutes, then carefully turn and grill another 3 to 4 minutes. Serve alone or on burger buns.
