One of the biggest fashion faux pas for women is not dressing correctly for their body type. Just as one size does not fit all, a look that is flattering for one woman can be a fashion nightmare for another. Along with color and fit, wearing the perfect neckline for your body type can make a huge difference, and to help us determine who should be wearing what, Skinnymom called on Jasmine Grimm, founder of Ruby, Inc. to sort through the details.

According to Grimm, determining your best neckline first begins with your bust line. “If a woman has larger breasts, she should opt for a wide open neckline or a v-neck,” she says. She also recommends corset shapes with sleeves as well as wrap tops in a light knit to flatter the neckline. The reason for these types of necklines is that they elongate the area making it appear slimmer and narrower. Wearing items with higher necklines or made from thicker material will only add width to the area making you appear wider or heavier.

For women with smaller breasts, Grimm recommends high neck tank tops with cut away sleeves, slashed necks, halters and sleeveless tops. Adding shirts with chunky detail is also a safe bet as it will add some volume to the area making you appear a bit fuller while adding dimension.

Regardless of bust size, Grimm says that the way clothing fits is the most important thing to keep in mind. “Just because you can squeeze into and article of clothing doesn’t mean that it fits,” she says. “Clothing should skim the body. This is one of the best ways to look thinner.” Even with a good fit, never underestimate the power of a great undergarment. Having the right bra or even adding Spanx can accentuate areas you wish to highlight while concealing areas you don’t.

Even with all of these tips in mind at the end of the day it all comes down to what you love on yourself. No matter how great something fits or how well the neckline flatters, if you don’t love it, you won’t rock it and your negativity will cast shadows on the garment. So the next time you head to the dressing room, stock up on a variety of looks to try before deciding. You never know, the right neckline just may be enough to change your entire outlook on shopping for the day!
