I would say that many workouts can help increase a person’s confidence. Just getting the endorphin rush will help, plus all of the great side-effects of working out; such as losing weight and feeling better. However, there is nothing quite like dancing for me to help improve my confidence. Particularly the dance exercise called Zumba fitness. As my blogging title might indicate, I know a few things about Zumba, but what you may not know is that I was not always comfortable with the entire idea of going into a room and dancing in front of people.
I recall the first time I went into a Zumba class. I was self conscious, I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing, and I had no idea what the moves were or how to follow along. But, before I realized it I had a smile on my face and I was sweating. Many people have a lot of fun in Zumba fitness classes, but what many people may not know is that Zumba classes are also a great interval training workout. I shortly realized that this was a great way to burn calories and improve my fitness level, but also make friends and have fun. What I didn’t know however, was how much more confident I would feel once I became more comfortable with allowing myself to move without holding myself back in fear of “embarrassing myself”. I shortly realized that most people are just trying to follow along themselves, and pay me no never-mind… so, honestly even if I did mess up 5, 10, 20 times… the only person who really cared was ME.
I am a huge advocate for group fitness – it’s my favorite type of workout. I like the competitive streak it gives me (I feel like I push myself more in group fitness classes) and I also feel like I do more in a group fitness class in an hour than I would do on my own most of the time. So, for me, a group fitness class is my primary go-to for exercise. With that said, Zumba fitness can be done in a group setting (my personal favorite) or in the privacy of your own home (using a workout DVD/video or game.) So, for many people who love to dance but may feel uneasy about “letting loose” in front of others, there is always an option.
I have met many people through Zumba, and most of them have similar stories. Most have never had a background in dance, and when they started taking Zumba classes were in the very back of the class (I was part of the back wall I think.) Before you know it, you are moving up closer to the front, are in the front, and a lot of people even become licensed to teach Zumba (like me) because they love it so much and want to help inspire others to find their inner love of fitness and also their self-confidence.
There is just something about Zumba that brings out your inner-light; before you know it, you lose yourself in the moves of the music, and you feel empowered, beautiful, and dare I say it… sexy.
