It is time to start thinking about how to avoid summer weight gain! Like a lot of women, you probably spent the last few months working off any extra pounds to make sure you look good in your swimsuit, but you can’t forget about diet and exercise during the summer if you want to keep looking great. Read on to learn about some of the top tips from two fitness experts.
Our first set of tips comes from Brian Durbin, a personal trainer with degrees in exercise science and biomechanics who is also a franchise owner of Fitness Together. Durbin’s training methodologies have helped over a thousand clients improve the appearance of their midsection, lose weight and reenergize their lives.
The first tip is to ease into new eating habits. This means instead of making rash decisions such as cleaning out all of the food in your pantry and exercising seven days a week, set up a schedule of small behavioral changes that support your overall fitness goals. This helps break up one major goal into small incremental changes so that your new active lifestyle not only becomes more manageable but provides opportunity to celebrate successes.
You can also switch things up to help prevent weight gain. You can do this by making changes to your exercise equipment, type of exercises and meals. If you do the same thing every week, or eat similar foods every day, you won’t be excited about your eight week plan and less likely to stick to it.
Keep it simple with this three-pronged approach:
- Strength-train a minimum of three times a week.
- Get in at least 30 minutes of cardio most days of the week (and preferably daily).
- Eat healthy, eat light, and eat often.
Our second set of tips comes from Lisa DeFazio, MS, RD, a registered dietician who is also a Hollywood diet expert.
The top three ways to avoid summer weight gain are:
- drink water and low calorie beverages, limit and avoid sodas, high sugar beverages
- keep active, swim, walk early in the day or later in the day when weather is cooler or go to the gym!
- enjoy summer fruits and vegetables by having lighter meals like big salads, fruit salads and veggie wraps and smoothies
Some of the ways in which celebs avoid summer weight gain include:
- high protein smoothies
- meal delivery programs like Frershology
- Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig
- vegan and raw diets
When traveling during the summer:
- Limit alcohol
- Stay active, walk, use the hotel gym
- Light dinners-protein and veggies
- Limit desserts
- Drink lots of water

One last piece of advice comes from Dr. Jennifer Hanes, a board certified physician that specializes in women’s issues and author of the book Lady in Weighting.
Ask yourself if you are enjoying what you’re eating. For example, if you are eating a cupcake, and the icing is the part you really enjoy then there is really no need to eat the whole thing, just cut the top part off and throw away the rest (or share with someone who only likes the cake part!) This same trick applies to any food. “I always leave the crust of bread and pies on the plate. I don’t really enjoy crust so why eat the extra calories,” Dr. Hanes said.
