It’s pitch black outside when my alarm goes off at 4:30 A.M. My kids won’t be up for at least 2 hours and my husband is sound asleep next to me. It’s time to hit the gym. I love starting out the day with a good sweat. I am head over heels for exercise, and you can be too with these four tips to love working out!


1. Change your mindset. Repeat after me, “Exercise is NOT punishment”. Exercise is the best thing you can do for your body. Too often it’s seen as something a woman has to do or dreads doing. We use every excuse in the book to avoid it. Instead of thinking you have to exercise, tell yourself you deserve to exercise.


2. Make goals unrelated to a scale. Too often women get frustrated that the number on the scale isn’t going down so they quit working out. When I get in a work out slump, I write down a few performance goals to keep me inspired. Time yourself on a run and try to beat that time. Taking a class with 5lb weights? Try going up to 8lb weights and see if you can make it through. These goals can be short term or something that may take a while. You’re a work in progress so keep on pushing.


3. Choose a workout that fits your interests. You wouldn’t sit through a movie you have no interest in, so why would a workout be any different? If you danced while growing up, get to a Zumba class! Really want to relax and clear your mind? Head to yoga! A quick search online can turn up hundreds of options for anyone in any city.


4. Involve the ones you love. Grab a mom buddy and have a weekly kickboxing “night out”. Try kayaking with your spouse. My son loves running “races” (aka sprint intervals) with mommy. Having a buddy holds you accountable and adds a very enjoyable social aspect to working out.
