Now is the time to get out of your own way and take your workout to the next level. Experiment with these 10 tips from NYC celebrity trainer Joel Harper.


Attitude is key: If you’re not “in it to win it”, you need to figure out why. Otherwise your fitness goals will decrease over time. The clients I have that accomplish their goals, are the ones who believe they deserve it. Do you? On a scale of 1-10 (10 being you are a warrior), where do you stand? If it is below a 9, you need to figure out why.

Create a goal to work toward: Looking for some real motivation? Try signing up for a Green Race in your local area.  Swim, run, ride and recycle. This is a great way to force yourself to prepare, since there is a deadline.

Try a push up and sit up contest with a friend: The goal – 100 push-ups and 200 sit-ups. When you can’t do any more push-ups, switch to sit ups. Whenever you switch, that is a point. See who has the lowest number at the finish line.

Hire an expert personal trainer to whip you into shape: Worth every penny, especially if you ask them to take you through their most intense workout. This will get you out of your comfort zone, and break up your routine.

Take a dance class: It will work muscles that have been dormant, improve your coordination and you will break a serious sweat.

Try top personal trainers workout DVD’s: Train with the experts and torque your routine, get out of your own head and give yourself a point of reference to what type of shape you are in.

Use your bike or “run” all your errands: Make a list of all the “to-dos” you can get done by running/biking from one to the next. Grab your backpack and get going.

Don’t forget to stretch:  With your feet together drop down and hang towards your toes. Can you touch them? If not, that is NOT good. Everyone has tension, get rid of yours. If you have food in your teeth you would floss it right out, do the same with tightness. Take yoga or a stretch class at your gym, or find a DVD.

Enjoy the silence: Close your eyes every day and repeat this to yourself. “I have an abundance of energy and am bringing joy to every person that I come into contact with.” This will increase your energy, while giving you clarity and focus.

Don’t sweat it: Consider this your mental exercise. If you don’t get your workout in or you eat something unhealthy, don’t beat yourself up. This can have a negative trickle down affect to achieving your goals.
