Monday represents the start of a fresh, new week. It is an opportunity to start checking to-dos off the seemingly never-ending list of tasks including appointments, shopping, play dates, workouts, blog writing, cooking, making important phone calls…you get it already. In fact, I know you likely have your own lengthy list. I know that all of our tasks vary as we all juggle different responsibilities. What is most important (and the point of this post), is that I also know we can get overwhelmed by all of those tasks left unchecked.
It’s for this reason that I have come up with a Monday Mantra. Here it is:
Live in the moment.
Simple, right? It’s a phrase we have all likely heard many times. I know for me I have heard and read these words a thousand times over. However, I think this phrase deserves a little more attention than we all give it.
When preparing the kiddos breakfasts in the early morning hours, when sitting in traffic, or cleaning up a pile of a million spilled toothpicks my toddler managed to swindle out of a drawer I thought was too high for reach – I end up thinking about all of the things I should be doing, need to do, or will never be able to get done.
What I want to realize is that in that moment of forward thought, I may be missing something so much more significant. I may be missing a thankful smile as I serve a repetitive breakfast. I could lose out on an opportunity for a family sing-a-long while sitting in the car. I may let the opportunity pass to teach my little one to count using toothpicks rather than stressing over scrambling to clean up a meaningless mess.
Here is my top of the week request – repeat this Monday Mantra and cherish the here and now moments. Avoid missed opportunities and savor the gift of the present.
