School has started again which also means that my family has our annual “back-to-school” cold. It never fails to appear just as our big boy heads off to school for the year. Apparently it is going around everywhere—the sore throat, coughing, and sneezing. I found this pin for a homemade cough remedy from good food matters that works well. It not only helps control the cough, but it soothes the throat as well. Sometimes it is very difficult to get little ones to swallow cough medicine because of the taste, but this sweet concoction is easy to swallow. Please make sure that you do not give honey to a child younger than twelve months, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Try this recipe the next time you are hit with a nasty cold.
MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY
¼ teaspoon cayenne
¼ teaspoon ginger
1 Tablespoon cider vinegar
2 Tablespoon water
1 Tablespoon honey
Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 tablespoon as needed for cough.
Note: this doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using.
