Kerri Walsh: Post-Baby Bounce Back from Gold Medalist

Kerri Walsh

For the average woman, getting her body and her life back after the birth of a baby can prove to be quite the dilemma, but for some women; women like Kerri Walsh, it’s all about having a good attack line! So how did the 2004 Gold Medalist, AVP & MVP winner not only get that beach body back in record time but also jump back into the game of volleyball so quickly? It was all about her prep work.

While Walsh does admit to giving into her cravings occasionally (which include both Chipotle and her fav… Thanksgiving Dinner!), she tried to eat healthy the majority of the time while she was pregnant. “It was my pregnancy regiment itself that helped me so much. I continued to lift weights, do Pilates, cardio… the whole bit,” Walsh says. “I worked hard while I was pregnant which helped me to bounce back even quicker so I could then push myself even harder to get back into competitive (and bikini) shape!”

In addition to her positive attitude and determination, Kerri’s other line of defense is KT Tape. KT Tape is a lightweight tape that when applied along tendons, muscle and ligaments, provides a strong, external support to assist in injury prevention and recovery. As Walsh explains, “KT Tape has helped me with form, function and stability. It has helped me with recovery and inflammation problems, and has given my less than perfect shoulder the extra support it needs to perform its very best.” Walsh credits KT Tape for being one of her major “go-to” items in helping her prepare for her 4th run at the 2012 Olympic Games.

With everything on Walsh’s plate, one might think that she struggles for balance, but to the contrary she claims to have more balance now that she’s added a family to her daily list of to-do’s. She claims, “I no longer obsess over a loss nor do I eat, sleep and live volleyball. I have my beautiful family and I have my amazing career, both for which I have infinite passion, love and respect. This is making me a better athlete and a better, happier person.” Walsh also encourages mothers who are on the fence about jumping back into a workout or sports due to missing time with baby not to feel guilty. She feels that in order to take care of the family, a mother needs to first take care of herself. She also believes in allowing your passion for exercise and staying active to trickle down to your children. By letting your children know that it is important for mommy to take 1-2 hours a day to work out or stay active, your children will adopt this healthy habit as well.

So keep an eye out for Kerry Walsh. Between her impeccable talent, her will to get the job done, and of course her awesome partner Misty May-Treanor; London and the 2012 Olympics better be prepared to have the house (and the Volleyball courts) brought down!
