As of today, I’m 16 weeks along! On Friday I felt the baby move for the first time. It was incredible. I was sitting at my desk working and there was a flutter in my stomach. It was such an amazing moment. I didn’t expect to feel the baby move already, but I was ecstatic!
To make my day even better we had a doctor appointment for my 16 week check up and we were able to hear the heartbeat. During this appointment the doctor checked my weight, blood pressure, and completed a urine analysis. I was surprised at how quick this appointment was. We were only there a total of 15 minutes. The doctor asked me how I was feeling and then let us listen to our baby’s quick beating heart. She then told us that because the heartbeat was so fast, we had a “50% chance that it was a girl.” I was immediately excited because I would love to have a baby girl. However, after my husband looked at me and said think about what she just said, I realized the obvious. So for now, we don’t know what the sex is but we’ll find out soon enough. On December 30th, we have an ultrasound appointment to find out what the sex of the baby is. Overall, we had a wonderful appointment and I can’t wait for the next one.
The only question I left with was should we get genetic testing done? Our doctor told us that it was our decision but that we needed to have it completed very soon if we decided to do so. We asked her what percentage of couples did the testing and she said it was more of an age factor. Since I am only 32, I am not a high risk pregnancy, so we decided against it. If anyone has any thoughts on this testing, please let me know.

I had the quad testing done @17 weeks and it came back negative. I was 33 yrs old when I got pregnant (4/2010) . We have a 3 yr old boy and 11 month old. @ our 11 months (6 month check) Well chiid exam our doctor suggested doing some blood work for why my son wasnt sitting he would just lean forward and not rolling much. Well in August we found out that he has Mosaic Down Syndrom. So the blood work that I had done while pregnant came back negative did not catch that he had downs. Also when you get over the age of 35 u are at higher risk but it truely does not matter your age. I know a few other ladies that have a child with downs and they were in their early 20′s. So whatever you do is your choice and so you have to be ok with it. And there is nothing wrong with it. Celebrate that you have a wonderful baby in your belly. Always try to be positive. Best wishes to you and your growing family.
We opted against genetic testing in all three of our pregnancies, despite the fact I am 35. Although it does provide peace of mind for many expectant moms, I felt like I would spend too much time worrying. Several of my friends have also had false positives, which caused a great deal of stress during their pregnancies.
We also knew that the outcome of the tests would change nothing in our decision to continue with the pregnancy. To me, it wasn’t worth it.
